Preparing for Your MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a safe, totally painless way for your physician to look inside the body without x-rays. The exam uses radiowaves and a magnetic field to create images of the soft tissues of the body.

You can eat, drink and take regularly-prescribed medications prior to the exam. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown to avoid any possibility of interference from metal in zippers and fasteners. You will be asked to remove your watch, credit cards, jewelry, keys, hearing aid, and any other metal objects before approaching the MRI.

A Tradition of Teamwork

South Bend Orthopaedics has partnered with NationalRad to provide our patients with the highest level of technology and compassionate care. NationalRad is the nation’s premier provider of MRI and CT interpretations, employing board-certified and fellowship-trained musculoskeletal radiologists. This is the highest level of training available and ensures the highest quality in our interpretations of MRI images.

MRI with Metal Artifact Reduction Sequence (MARS)

MARS studies are a type of MRI used to scan a body part that has a metal implant, such as a joint replacement. Metal implants can cause distortion of the magnetic field used in MRI, thereby impairing the image quality obtained by the MRI. MARS studies reduce the size and intensity of magnetic field distortion caused by a metal implant, providing a better picture of the body part being examined.

MARS studies are complex procedures that require a high-field MRI unit and very specific protocols. As a result, South Bend Orthopaedics is one of a few imaging centers offering these studies. The need for MRI studies with MARS has risen over time with the increasing the number of orthopedic metal implants used each year, but has grown substantially in the last several months with DePuy’s voluntary recall of the ASR XL Hip.

Metal implants including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Metal-on-metal arthroplasty devices (total joint replacements) such as the DePuy ASR XL Hip

  • Painful joint replacements that are otherwise normal on radiographs

  • Metal, open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) devices for traumatic injuries/fractures.
