
Dr. Brian Ratigan on Moms Everyday Show
Dr. Brian Ratigan is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in sports medicine with an interest in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. He is the Director of Orthopaedic Care for Notre Dame Athletics and specifically the head Orthopaedic physician for football, men and women basketball, men and women soccer, track, and baseball. Dr. Ratigan’s specialized procedures include shoulder arthroscopies, rotator cuff and labral repairs, total and reverse total shoulder arthroplasties, knee arthroscopies, ACL reconstructions, MPFL reconstructions, robotic assist (MAKO) total knee replacements, partial knee replacements, PRP injections, and cartilage restoration procedures in the knee.
Dr. Ratigan earned his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 2002. In 2007, he completed residency training in orthopaedic surgery with The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He completed fellowship training in sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
Growing up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dr. Ratigan had a successful high school career in athletics where he earned all-state honors in football, basketball, baseball, and track & field. He was the Iowa Football Gatorade Player of the Year. He earned a scholarship to play football for Coach Lou Holtz at the University of Notre Dame where he was a four-year monogram winner and linebacker at the University of Notre Dame (1989-1992). After graduation, he pursued his professional football career with the Indianapolis Colts (1993-1995).
Dr. Ratigan currently resides in Granger with his wife, Maura, who is also a Notre Dame graduate (BA ‘93, JD ‘96). They have five children: Sean (ND ‘21), Conor (ND ‘23), Kelly, Austin, and Reese. In his free time, Dr. Ratigan enjoys coaching sports, cheering on his children in their activities, attending Notre Dame sporting events, and spending time with relatives in Iowa and Philadelphia.
