Dr. Brian Ratigan is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine with an interest in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. He is the Director of Orthopedic Care for Notre Dame Athletics and specifically the head orthopedic physician for football, men and women basketball, men and women soccer, track, and baseball. Dr. Ratigan’s specialized procedures include shoulder arthroscopies, rotator cuff and labral repairs, total and reverse total shoulder arthroplasties, knee arthroscopies, ACL reconstructions, MPFL reconstructions, robotic assist (MAKO) total knee replacements, partial knee replacements, PRP injections, and cartilage restoration procedures in the knee.
Dr. Ratigan earned his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 2002. In 2007, he completed residency training in orthopaedic surgery with The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He completed fellowship training in sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
Growing up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dr. Ratigan had a successful high school career in athletics where he earned all-state honors in football, basketball, baseball, and track & field. He was the Iowa Football Gatorade Player of the Year. He earned a scholarship to play football for Coach Lou Holtz at the University of Notre Dame where he was a four-year monogram winner and linebacker at the University of Notre Dame (1989-1992). After graduation, he pursued his professional football career with the Indianapolis Colts (1993-1995).
Dr. Ratigan currently resides in Granger with his wife, Maura, who is also a Notre Dame graduate (BA ‘93, JD ‘96). They have five children: Sean (ND ‘21), Conor (ND ‘23), Kelly, Austin, and Reese. In his free time, Dr. Ratigan enjoys coaching sports, cheering on his children in their activities, attending Notre Dame sporting events, and spending time with relatives in Iowa and Philadelphia.

Jeff Oney, PA, MSM, MS
is a board certified (NCCPA) physician assistant working with Dr. Brian Ratigan, MD at South Bend Orthopedics. He joined Dr. Ratigan’s team in the fall of 2019 and assists in surgery, conducts physical exams, diagnoses conditions, orders and interprets diagnostic test, writes prescriptions and performs various injections including ultrasound guided injections.
Jeff graduated from Western Michigan University (WMU), magna cum laude, with a major in athletic training and a minor in biology in 2007. He went on to complete a two-year graduate assistantship, serving as head athletic trainer at Benton Harbor High School while earning a masters of science degree in sports medicine and exercise science from WMU in 2010. He went on to complete WMU’s Physician Assistant program, graduating in 2015 earning a masters of science in medicine degree.
Prior to joining South Bend Orthopedics, he worked as a physician assistant at Borgess Orthopedics, in Kalamazoo, MI for 4 years (2015-2019).
He worked as an athletic trainer and certified strength and conditioning specialist from 2007-2013, working at all levels of competition, from the NFL (New England Patriots athletic trainer summer intern 2007) to high school athletics.
Jeff grew up in Bridgman, MI and graduated from Bridgman High School (’02) and was an accomplished high school athlete earning 12 varsity letters (football 4, baseball 4, basketball 3 and track and field 1). He competed in collegiate basketball at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, MI for two years before transferring to WMU.
Jeff continues to live an active lifestyle and enjoys running, cycling, weight training and yoga and has completed 3 full marathons and 3 half marathons. Jeff, his wife Katie and three children, Colin, Makenzie and Addison enjoy outdoor activities, movie nights and traveling.
